Why is there a Facility Charge?
That question has been asked more than a few times at our office...the answer...It’s the fairest way to divide our costs. Our costs can be divided into two groups of costs: fixed and variable. Fixed costs include maintenance of the lines, billing and administrative costs. Variable costs are the cost of power and energy. Fixed costs are the same whether or not any energy is used by a particular member. It is fair, therefore, that each member pay his or her share of these costs. The variable costs of power and energy are paid for out of the kWh rate.

If we eliminated the facility charge our rates would have to go up accordingly. Our members who live here full-time would be subsidizing our members who are part-time residents. As a cooperative we follow a cost-of-service principle, where everyone pays their share, but no more than their share.
